The much sought after tanker jacket was a thicker and warmer alternative to the M41 field jacket. During the Normandy campaign mostly only officers had tanker clothing. By Feb of 1945 the 5th Ranger Battalion had been issued complete tanker uniforms complete with wool lined overalls.
They are made from tightly woven, wind resistant, olive drab cotton poplin and lined with wool flannel cloth. Although comfortable and stylish, the M1941 was found to be lacking as a field jacket due to its relatively light weight and various design shortcomings.

An amazing original 1940's WW2 era US Army M-1941 wool lined field jacket with a newer 1st Cavalry Division patch. It is possibly civilian made as it doesn't have a zip and the wool lining is slightly different to the usual issue lining. It is in great used condition for its age with only a few minor blemishes.
By comparison, ATF's M1941's use custom woven 5 oz. cotton poplin, now Teflon treated. Our lining is now a high quality cotton flannel, rather than the wool used in WWII and this has dropped the cost of the jacket over 30%- while the difference thermal value is minimal. These are fitted with genuine Talon brand zippers.

Sep 16, 2015· The website states, and I quote, "The Summer M41's are identical to our regular M1941 Field Jackets except that they are lined with cotton fabric instead of wool." The regular M1941 jackets use TALON zippers. The Summer M1941 jacket that I received came with some generic no-name zipper instead of a Talon zipper. See photo below. Summary
The M1941 Field Jacket was introduced in 1940 and became the standard combat uniform for soldiers and Marines until the end of WWII. Officially called "Jacket, Field, OD", it was introduced in May 1941 and was worn throughout World War Two. Based on recommendations from Maj. Gen. James Parsons, the jackets are hip length, loose fitting, and designed for freedom of movement.
This would make a G.I an easy target for German snipers. As a quick fix Soldiers tended to wear the jacket inside out, as the wool liner was a darker, allowing for better camouflage while in the field. Throughout the course of WWII, many different civilian companies where issued contracts to make the M1941 Field Jacket.

Mar 13, 2010· I'll recommend the ATF M1941 1st Pattern Field Jackets as they are pretty much correct. The ATF regular M1941 Field Jackets on the other hand are incorrect in zipper length, cuff stitching, and epaulet length. These issues should be fixed in their upcoming run, so I would wait till those come in prior to purchase.
Still convinced of the superiority of the wool field jacket, the ETO command rejected the M-1943 Field Jacket other than approving it for parachute troops. It was Littlejohn's intention to supply troops during the coming winter with the wool field jacket, sweaters, and wool overcoat. Any shortages were to be made up by the old M-1941 field jacket.

Apr 30, 2018· The M-1941 was a good idea, but ultimately a poorly-executed one. By the outbreak of WWII, the U.S. army uniform had become a tighter and impractical version of the uniform worn in WWI. In its current state, the field jacket was suitable only for garrison duty.
Lined with a blanket type material which is a wool mix, to give that 1940’s look. High collar so it can be pulled up around the neck and face when its really cold. Collar is blanket lined for extra warmth. Wide waist belt with metal buckle. Wrap over design which is fastened with large buttons. Longer than the M41 jacket and tankers jacket.
